The Lure Of The Super Bowl
I love football, but I know that not everyone does. What I find amazing is that there are some that will not watch one single regular season game, but they then tune in for the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Some only watch the championship game each year, but ignore football the rest of the year. The reasons for this may be simple and amusing as well. They also tell us something about human nature. We like competition, and we love a huge spectacle. This game is something that has both in spades. I watch football all year long, but I am not always interested in the Super Bowl. For many like me, we may watch it, but something is lost if we don’t care much about either of the teams involved. However, if a team is hated, we will root for the other team, and that can put some excitement back in the game. When we have one of our favorite teams in the Super Bowl, however, that is an entirely different story. The day of the game almost becomes its own holiday. On the other side of the coin, those that love sports but don’t care much for football will love the Super Bowl no matter who is playing. They may not care who is playing, they just want to see some good competition going on. It’s like the football junkie that really doesn’t care for baseball, but will end up watching the World Series just because of the excitement that comes along with it. There is a reason why all of the championships for any sport are the most watched events on television. It’s not just about the sport, as with the Super Bowl, but also with everything that comes along with it. The other side of the Super Bowl is the friendship and the party. Almost everyone watching will either go to or host a party on that Sunday. Though traditions vary, most parties for the Super Bowl include having good finger food, BBQ (weather permitting), and a lot of yelling and screaming at the game. Most gather for the game, but some will just tag along for the fun, and to have a first glance at some of the commercials that air for the very first time on that day. Those alone have become a tradition, and are talked about almost as much as the game itself.
