Relief finally came as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Sunday evening, announced the release of the 38 church worshippers, recently abducted during an attack on Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, in Ekiti Local Government Area of the state.
The president also announced that 51 out of those abducted from a school in Niger State had been recovered, expressing joy over the development as he thanked the nation's security forces over the last few days for their efforts.
President Tinubu made this known in a statement personally signed by him, copy of which was made available to newsmen, saying that he was personally and closely monitoring the security situation nationwide and receiving continuous updates from the frontline.
The president, who quickly recalled that he cancelled his trip to the G20 summit in South Africa to enable him coordinate the security efforts at home, assured of his resolve not to relent to ensure that every Nigerian, in every state, has the right to safety under his watch.
Text of the statement reads:
"My fellow Nigerians,
"You will recall that I cancelled my trip to the G20 summit in South Africa to enable me coordinate the security efforts at home.
"Thanks to the efforts of our security forces over the last few days, all the 38 worshippers abducted in Eruku, Kwara State have been rescued.
"I am equally happy that 51 out of the missing students of the Catholic School in Niger State, have been recovered.
"I am closely monitoring the security situation nationwide and receiving continuous updates from the frontline.
"Let me be clear: I will not relent. Every Nigerian, in every state, has the right to safety — and under my watch, we will secure this nation and protect our people.
Earlier, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State had announced the release of 38 persons that were abducted during an attack on Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of the state.
The governor made this known in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Rafiu Ajakaye, applauding President Tinubu for his hands-on involvement in the rescue operation.
This was just as he recalled that the president had postponed his scheduled trip to the G20 meeting in South Africa to personally oversee security measures in Kwara and Kebbi states, saying that the Nigeria's No 1 citizen also directed heightened security deployments to Kwara, "in what underlined his firm commitment to the safety and well-being of our people and Nigerians as a whole."
The governor also highlighted the key role of Federal authorities and security agencies in securing the release of the abductees.
“After many days of hard work by security forces and government representatives, HE AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (CON) is excited to announce the freedom of 38 persons who were recently abducted in an attack on Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Eruku, Ekiti LGA, Kwara State,” the statement said.
"The governor credited President Bola Tinubu, for his hands-on involvement in the rescue operation.
“The governor says this is wholly due to the hands-on approach of President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, who has personally led the efforts to free the abductees. The abductees were freed today, November 23.
"The governor is immensely grateful to President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, for his direct initiative that made this happen,” the statement said.
“The President had called off his scheduled trip for the G20 Meeting in South Africa to attend to the breaches in Kwara and Kebbi states.
“He had also directed heightened security deployments to Kwara, in what underlined his firm commitment to the safety and well-being of our people and Nigerians as a whole," it added.
Governor AbdulRazaq, while further thanking Federal security agencies and local forces involved in the operation, expressed appreciation to the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA); the Department of State Services (DSS); the Nigerian Army; the Nigeria Intelligence Agency; "and, of course, the Nigeria Police, which has graciously deployed four new tactical teams to Kwara State on the directive of the president."
Besides, the governor equally thanked other stakeholders whose support aided the rescue efforts.
