Just In: Court Sentences IPOB Leader, Nnamdi Kanu To Life Imprisonment

A Federal High Court in Abuja, in a landmark ruling on Thursday, sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on all seven counts of terrorism charges against him. 

Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the case, found Kanu guilty on several counts, including issuing "sit-at-home" orders in the South-East and inciting violence through his broadcasts. 

Delivering the judgement, Justice Omotosho noted that, the convict had not acted well throughout the proceedings, stressing that he had caused unnecessary delay in the proceedings.

Omotosho pronounced other verdicts as follows: in respect to Count 3, he sentenced Kanu to 20 years imprisonment, and for Count 7 he sentenced him to 5 years imprisonment with no option of fine for both.

The judge pronounced that sentence shall run concurrently.

Omotosho said Kanu must be kept in a suitable facility as he had violent tendencies, which he also displayed in open court.

The judge further declared that the convict must not be allowed any digital devices, and if he must, the devices must be closely monitored by the National Security Adviser (NSA).

It was previously reported that Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja had found the leader of the proscribed IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, guilty of all seven counts of terrorism charges filed against him by the Federal Government.

Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Omotosho, cited prosecution evidence, including video interviews, broadcasts in which Kanu made violent threats against Nigeria and its citizens, as the basis for the conviction.
