A group, under the aegis of PDP National Rebranding Forum, on Thursday expressed concerns over the unfortunate inferno that engulfed the Great Nigeria House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the recurring fire disasters that continue to threaten lives, livelihoods, and national assets across our country.
It would be recalled that the unfortunate inferno engulfed the Great Nigeria House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on 24th December 2025, resulting in personal injury and loss of properties worth millions of naira.
The political group, in a statement issued and signed by its National Secretary/Head Media Team, Prince Christopher Odianarewo, who is also the National Convener, Progressive Youths for Makinde’s Presidency 2027, deeply commiserated with the victims, occupants, business owners, and families affected by the tragic incident, especially at a time when many Nigerians were preparing to celebrate the Christmas season, noting that the loss of property, disruption of livelihoods, and emotional trauma resulting from this inferno cannot be overstated.
"The unfortunate inferno that engulfed the Great Nigeria House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, on 24th December 2025 is a painful reminder of the recurring fire disasters that continue to threaten lives, livelihoods, and national assets across our country.
"We deeply commiserate with the victims, occupants, business owners, and families affected by this tragic incident, especially at a time when many Nigerians were preparing to celebrate the Christmas season. The loss of property, disruption of livelihoods, and emotional trauma resulting from this inferno cannot be overstated," the group said.
The PDP Forum, while acknowledging the efforts of emergency responders and first responders who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent further damage, further noted that the incident again exposes the urgent need for proactive, preventive, and systemic measures by relevant authorities.
According to the Forum, Lagos Island, being a historic and densely populated commercial hub, requires enhanced fire safety infrastructure, strict enforcement of building regulations, regular safety audits, and improved emergency response readiness, urging the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies to go beyond post disaster responses by investing in modern fire fighting equipment, enforcing compliance with safety standards in old and new buildings, and carrying out sustained public enlightenment campaigns on fire prevention.
"While we acknowledge the efforts of emergency responders and first responders who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent further damage, this incident again exposes the urgent need for proactive, preventive, and systemic measures by relevant authorities. "We urge the Lagos State Government and relevant agencies to go beyond post disaster responses by investing in modern fire fighting equipment, enforcing compliance with safety standards in old and new buildings, and carrying out sustained public enlightenment campaigns on fire prevention. Prevention, not reaction, must be the cornerstone of our disaster management strategy.
"Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those affected. It is our collective responsibility, government, building owners, businesses, and residents, to ensure that such tragic occurrences are minimized in the future. Lives are too precious, and our national heritage too important, to be lost to preventable disasters," the group said.
"May this tragedy serve as a turning point toward stronger safety consciousness and decisive government action," it prayed.
