The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has categorically refuted reports circulating in some quarters claiming that the Commission had released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Elections, declaring such as false and misleading.
The commission made this in a signed statement by the Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, copy of which was made available to newsmen on Friday, saying that it had not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections.
"The Commission wishes to state clearly that this information is false and misleading. INEC has not released any timetable or schedule of activities for the 2027 General Elections," the electoral Umpire said.
The Commission, while reiterating that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law, noted that Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 provides, in particular that the Commission shall publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election, declaring pointedly that any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from the body.
"The Commission reiterates that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law. In particular, Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 provides that the Commission shall publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election. Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC," it said.
INEC, therefore, assured Nigerians that the official Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Elections would be released in due course, saying that such would be done in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, and the Electoral Act, 2022.
It further assured that"when released, it will be communicated through the Commission’s established and verified channels."
INEC urged the public and the media to disregard the fake reports and always rely on information from the Commission’s official platforms for accurate and authoritative updates.
