As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and protect lives and property through improved driver fitness and alertness, the Lagos State Government is set to commence a comprehensive health and safety program for professional drivers.. operating within the state.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, who is the initiator of the program, made this known in a signed statement, copy of was made available to newsmen on Friday, saying that the event is scheduled to run from Monday 9th to Thursday 12th February, 2026 at different locations of the state.
According to him, the initiative is designed to address the occupational, health, and safety challenges faced by professional drivers, particularly truck drivers; who play a critical role in sustaining Lagos State’s economy and logistics ecosystem, disclosing that no fewer than 10,000 commercial drivers were expected to benefit from the program.
Adekoya further revealed that the program would be implemented across four strategic locations within the state, including Iyana Iba, Obalende, Lekki Free Trade Zone Parks and Lilly Pond bonded Terminal, Apapa.
"The initiative is designed to address the occupational, health, and safety challenges faced by professional drivers, particularly truck drivers; who play a critical role in sustaining Lagos State’s economy and logistics ecosystem.

Speaking further, he said the program aims to provide free eye screenings, free medical consultations, free corrective lenses, as well as substance abuse awareness and screenings to drivers, to promote responsible driving and improve overall road safety and, therefore, called on transport owners, associations, and unions to support the successful implementation of the initiative.
He said they should do this "by sensitising and mobilising their members to participate in the screenings and educational sessions, and by facilitating access to major parks and depots for program activities," noting that "the overall goal of the initiative is to ensure that every driver departing seaports, depots, and parks across Lagos State is physically fit, mentally alert, and visually capable of navigating the roads safely."
