Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the recent wave of deadly attacks in parts of Kwara, Katsina and Benue states, describing the situation as clear evidence that Nigeria was fast turning into a "killing field."
Atiku expressed this concern in a statement, copy of which was made available to newsmen on Thursday, saying the scale and frequency of the reported massacres reflected a grave failure of the state to fulfil its most basic responsibility: the protection of lives, particularly those of vulnerable citizens in repeatedly attacked communities.
The former vice president flayed what he termed empty condemnations issued after mass burials, saying that such approach is no longer acceptable, even as he stressed that Nigeria’s security approach must move beyond reactionary measures.
"Empty condemnations after mass burials are no longer acceptable. Security must be proactive, deliberate and preventive, not reactive. Communities that are attacked over and over again must not be left as open hunting grounds for criminals," he admonished.
The former vice president said he was deeply pained by the continued bloodshed and called for urgent, coordinated action by the Federal Government, state authorities and local communities to bring the violence to an end.
He warned that every life lost represented a failure of leadership, noting that the murder of even one Nigerian was unacceptable.
“The murder of even one Nigerian is an unforgivable failure,” Atiku said.
