A civic group under the aegis of New Direction for Nigeria Movement (NEDMO), has strongly condemned the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill signed into law on Wednesday by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as a piece of electoral thievery and, therefore, totally unacceptable.
NEDMO gave this position in a signed press statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Mark Adebayo, copy of which was made available to newsmen on Thursday, saying that it received the news of the precipitate signing into law of the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill passed by what it described as the rubber-stamp National Assembly with shock and disappointment.
This was just as the Movement sadly noted that President Tinubu had lost all his democratic credentials irretrievably "by signing this piece of electoral thievery manual into law so hurriedly" despite popular rejection by overwhelming numbers of Nigerians.
"We received the news of the precipitate signing into law of the obnoxious Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) Bill passed by the rubber-stamp national assembly with shock and disappointment.
"By signing this piece of electoral thievery manual into law so hurriedly by the president despite popular rejection by overwhelming numbers of Nigerians, the president has lost all his democratic credentials irretrievably," NEDMO said.
NEDMO alleged that what the act had portrayed from its own understanding is that the 2027 elections had been stolen in advance, sadly noting that this desperation to rig elections at all costs rubbishes the image of the nation's democracy and destroys electoral credibility.
It quickly warned that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) "will suffer double portions of the electoral injustices it is dishing out to Nigerians today" when eventually out of power.
"What we have seen is that the 2027 elections have been stolen in advance. This desperation to rig elections at all costs rubbishes the image of our democracy and destroys electoral credibility. When the APC is eventually out of power, it will suffer double portions of the electoral injustices it is dishing out to Nigerians today," the Movement said.
Speaking further, NEDMO further alleged that the Electoral Amendment Bill signed into Law was deliberately orchestrated by the National Assembly in order to perfect APC's totalitarian agenda of turning Nigeria into a one-Party state and life presidency for President Tinubu.
According to the Movement, this is not only antidemocratic, but equally draconian, unjust, and a brazen robbery committed in broad daylight, adding: "Nigeria has been stolen from us."
"It is so unfortunate and tragic that the power desperation of the president has deafened him to the loud cries of Nigerians for electoral reforms the most basic of which is a mandatory electronic transmission of election results real-time.
"There is nothing difficult in this except that the APC already knows it would lose in any free and fair election and, therefore, devised the means to rig the 2027 elections by hiding under the covers of an obnoxiously unacceptable law.
"No matter what the government says or does, this law is counterproductive to the development of our democracy and country and will continue to be resisted by Nigerians," NEDMO said.
