The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has affirmed that the strategic deployment of contemporary digital technologies within the traffic management framework has profoundly redefined the Authority’s emergency response operations.

The LASTMA boss added that this technological integration had accelerated intervention timelines and significantly bolstered the preservation of lives during road accidents and emergencies across Lagos State.

Bakare-Oki stated this at the weekend during a comprehensive operational review, describing the incorporation of advanced surveillance Drones, TMS cameras, GPS-enabled patrol vehicles/Troopers, intelligent communication systems, Bodycam, Toll free hotline, automated incident-detection platforms and a centralized command-and-control hub as a landmark transformation in LASTMA’s institutional evolution.

The LASTMA boss, in a signed statement by the Agency spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, copy of which was made available to newsmen, explained that this infusion of modern technology had generated unparalleled efficiency in incident coordination, emergency intervention and traffic management.

The LASTMA boss highlighted that previous operational limitations, often characterized by delayed incident reporting and logistical bottlenecks had been largely mitigated through real-time technological synchronization.

According to him, with these advanced monitoring capabilities, traffic incidents are now detected instantaneously, verified via digital feeds and communicated promptly to the nearest patrol or rescue unit, saying that this streamlined operational synergy had drastically reduced response intervals while optimizing field deployment strategies.

“Our commitment to technological modernization is anchored on the imperative to safeguard human life.

“Every minute saved in emergency response is invaluable. The deployment of intelligent systems has empowered our operatives to respond with unprecedented speed, precision and professional dexterity,” Bakare-Oki said.

He further revealed that LASTMA’s Rescue Team, Monitoring & Surveillance Unit, Comptrollers, Commanders, including all zonal heads now operate with mobile data terminals and integrated communication tools that maintain continuous interaction with the central command centre.

"This arrangement enables swift rerouting of traffic, immediate coordination with medical and security agencies and rapid clearance of accident debris, thereby averting secondary collisions and minimizing prolonged congestion.

"The integration of predictive data analytics has further strengthened proactive traffic management. By mapping congestion trends, high-risk corridors and recurrent accident hotspots, LASTMA can strategically position operatives ahead of peak-hour surges, enabling pre-emptive intervention before incidents escalate into systemic disruptions.

"This anticipatory approach has proven instrumental in reducing casualty rates and stabilizing vehicular flow in densely populated areas," he stated.

Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized that the government’s investment in modern digital infrastructure aligned with a broader vision of cultivating a smart, resilient and globally competitive megacity.

He described the modernization initiative as a testament to the administration’s unwavering commitment to institutional strengthening, public safety and infrastructural excellence.

According to him, beyond expediting emergency response, the technological transformation has enhanced documentation accuracy, transparency in enforcement and evidence-based policy formulation, adding: "Digital reporting platforms now provide comprehensive archival records of incidents, facilitating strategic evaluation and continuous refinement of operational protocols."

Reiterating that effective traffic management and the preservation of human life remained the core principles guiding LASTMA, Bakare-Oki noted that rapid emergency interventions not only reduced injuries and fatalities but also reinforced public confidence in the efficiency and reliability of state institutions.

“As we consolidate these achievements, our resolve remains unwavering. We shall continue to invest in technological innovation, capacity development and inter-agency collaboration to ensure Lagos roads remain safer, more orderly and optimally responsive to emergencies," he said.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, therefore, reassured the motoring public of its steadfast commitment to safeguarding commuters and sustaining seamless urban mobility.

It, however, urged residents and road users to cooperate with operatives, adhere strictly to traffic regulations and support ongoing modernization initiatives designed to preserve lives and enhance the efficiency of Lagos’s transportation network.
