Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday inaugurated the State Executive Council, just as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu charged members of the new body to take the state chapter to a level that it would be envied and referenced by other chapters across the country.
Governor Sanwo-Olu gave this charge, while speaking after the affirmation of exco members led by Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, by a voice vote by the party delegates who came from the 20 local government areas across in the state for the party Congress, which took place at Mobolaji Johnson Arena (formerly Onikan Stadium), Lagos Island.
Sanwo-Olu said Ojelabi and his executive having given word of commitment that they would commit themselves to the growth of the party, should uplift the party to the level that it becomes national reference point.
"To the chairman and the executive, you have the responsibility to take this party in the state to a level that it becomes national reference point.
You have to take this party to the level that it becomes a national reference, a national reference state party by ensuring that inclusivity, fairness, equity, justice are at play at all time, and also by ensuring that everybody that wants to be part of our house, there is a room for them and the tenets and the objectives of the party are held on to," he said.
The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his untiring leadership and mentorship of the party, stressing that his dedication and commitment to APC contributed to the success recorded, and particularly in Lagos State.
"What we have demonstrated here this morning is that, we have a single and a common purpose to ensure that the party formation, the party structure in our state is the best and next to none.
"Therefore, my first appreciation will be for our leader, the father of the nation, the number one citizen of our country but he too a Lagosian of no mean feat, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for his untiring leadership for our country, for remaining the party leader of the APC, but more importantly for remaining our own leader in Lagos.
"We want to thank you in absentia, because this is your own Congress, we want to thank you for your leadership that you have bestowed to us, for your timing and the way which you have made us, for the tutelage we have received under your guardianship, which have reflected, and we have demonstrated that today. Thank you very much for the leadership you give the country," Governor Sanwo-Olu said.
Ojelabi, in his remark, commended members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), members of the State House of Assembly and members of the State Executive Council for their support for the party in the state, adding that good governance strengthens democracy and reflects the collective resolve of the party.
Ojelabi, therefore, charged them not to relent on their support for the party, pointing out that this is a time for all to work together and ensure that APC continued to lead the way into liveable governance and sustainable development.
He further charged to remain steadfast, focused and united, saying that the future of Lagos State and Nigeria depended on their dedication and ability to work together "and ensure that no voice is left unheard and no house is idle."
"This is a time for us to work together and ensure that APC continues to lead the way into liveable governance and sustainable development of our people.
"I urge you to remain steadfast, focused and united.The future of Lagos State and Nigeria depends on our dedication and ability to work together representing our bond and ensure that no voice is left unheard and no house is idle," he stated.
Earlier in her speech, the chairman of the Congress, Stella Okotete, urged all aspirants to imbibe spirit of sportsmanship, irrespective of the outcome of the exercise, saying that they should not allow the outcome affect their love for the party.
"I urge our aspirants to demonstrate spirit of sportsmanship and our delegates to have commitment to the continued growth of APC in Lagos State.
"Leadership in our party is selfless and unity remains our greatest strength. Let us further consolidate our progressive mantra and strengthen our structure in support of President Bola Tinubu," Okotete said.
