Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged Nigerians to look beyond personal and family success but embrace broader community impact, stating that meaningful leadership required mentoring others, empowering people within one's environment, and creating opportunities that outlived individual achievements.
Governor Sanwo-Olu gave this admonition Thursday, at an event held at the Regency Hall, CBD, Alausa, Ikeja and organized by the Epe Club in honour of Alhaji Shakiru Seriki Bamu, a prominent politician and Member of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC).
Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, emphasised that people were ultimately remembered not for what they acquired, but for the impact they made within their communities, urging everyone to live and act in ways that leaved lasting positive legacies.
"We must empower not just our families but our communities. We must be mentors and raise mentees who will continue the work of development. Baba Bamu and his contemporaries have mentored many people, and that is why they are celebrated today," he stated.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also encouraged young people to remain hopeful and proactive, urging them to focus on opportunities rather than negativity.
This was just as the governor highlighted the increasing adoption of technology and innovation by Nigerians, particularly the youth, describing it as a positive sign for the country's future.
While commending the club for honouring Alhaji Shakiru Seriki Bamu with one of its facilities, the governor noted that his life exemplifies leadership, service, and commitment to community development, stressing that true legacy lies not in wealth alone but in the lives touched and empowered over time.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to look beyond negative narratives about the country, reaffirming his confidence in Nigeria’s steady progress.
The Governor cited ongoing structural reforms, expanding infrastructure, and investments in technical and vocational education as key drivers of national growth, noting that these initiatives were already creating opportunities and transforming lives.
"This country is progressing. Our president is doing well, infrastructure is expanding, and many initiatives being implemented today will change lives. Young people must see opportunities, seize them, and contribute positively," Governor Sanwo-Olu concluded.
Chairman of the Occasion and Minister for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, in his goodwill message, commended the leadership and members of the Epe Club for sustaining a proud tradition of honoring excellence, integrity, and community leadership, describing Alhaji Bamu as an iconic figure whose life reflected industry, mentorship, integrity, and unwavering commitment to national development.
The minister added that the celebration of icons, such as Alhaji Shakiru Bamu, further strengthens national values, inspires future leaders, and promotes sustainable development from the grassroots level, emphasizing that true success is not measured solely by personal achievements, but by meaningful contributions to commerce, education, and community progress.
Alausa, while commending the Epe Club for providing guidance and living examples of resilience, service, and excellence, noted that the event reinforces the shared responsibility of government, institutions, and communities in nurturing young people through education, values, and role models.
Earlier in his speech, the President, Epe Club, Chief Olayemi Dada, noted that the event is about celebrating an Icon, describing the celebrant, Alhaji Shakiru Seriki, as a builder of leaders who sees potential where others see limitations and a man who is always committed to the development of the community.
Chief Dada stated that as the pioneer club of Epe Division, the club gives support to communities across the division through bursary award to indigent students, medical equipment to Primary Healthcare Centers across Epe, adding: "In Epe we look out for ourselves, we also give food support intervention, organize seminars for the youths, resolve community disputes, and other social interactions."
