Bandits invade Kebbi school, shoot principal, kill VP, abduct 25 female students

Suspected bandits early Monday morning have attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, Danko Wasagu area of Kebbi State, killing the Vice-Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and abducting 25 students. 

It would be recalled that Maga, a community located in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of the state, has lately come under multiple attacks. 

According to a resident of Maga, Aliyu Yakubu, the bandits invaded the school at about 5 am on Monday without any resistance, saying that the attack had created panic among residents. 

"The attack has created panic among residents of Maga. We are now in fear and mourning," he said, disclosing that the school principal, Makuku was shot while trying to protect the students during the attack. 

"He was shot as he tried to protect his students from being taken by the bandits. It’s a great loss for the community and the school," the resident said. 

In a statement, the Command’s Spokesperson, CSP Nafi’u Abubakar, said on Monday in Birnin Kebbi that at about 4 a.m., information was received that a gang of bandits, wielding sophisticated weapons and shooting sporadically, stormed the school. 

Abubakar said police tactical units deployed in the school engaged the attackers in a gun duel, disclosing that the bandits had already scaled the school fence and abducted 25 students from their hostel to an unknown destination. 

“Unfortunately, the bandits had already scaled the school fence and abducted 25 students from their hostel to an unknown destination. 

"Similarly, one Hassan Makuku, was shot dead, while one Ali Shehu, sustained an injury on his right hand," he said. 

The police spokesperson added that a combined team of additional police tactical units, military personnel, and vigilantes had been deployed to the area and had begun combing the bandits’ routes and nearby forests, with a view to rescuing the students and arresting the perpetrators.

Abubakar said the Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of residents of the state. 

He appealed to the public to remain calm, vigilant, saying that they should continue supporting security operations to ensure the maintenance of peace and stability.

Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, disclosed that the Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, had been dispatched to the school to assess the situation on behalf of Governor Nasir Idris, who is currently out of the state.

"The deputy governor is on his way to know the exact situation. The governor is not in the state for now, but his deputy will go on his behalf until he returns at any moment from now," Idris said.
