Coastal highway project has brought substantial benefits to Lagos - Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for conceiving the idea of Coastal Highway, saying the project had brought substantial benefits to the state. 

Governor Sanwo-Olu gave this commendation, while speaking at the 2026 Annual Thanksgiving Service, organized by the state government, which is the 26th edition held on Sunday at the Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos Island with the theme: "Grateful for unfailing mercies." 

Dignitaries at the the Thanksgiving Service include the First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadir Obafemi Hamzat and his wife, Oluremi; former Deputy Governor, Mr. Femi Pedro; Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa; former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji; Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba and Chief of Staff (COS) to the Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde. 

Others are: Wife of former Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Bimbola Jakande; Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; members of the State Executive Council, lawmakers, heads of security agencies, political, religious and traditional leaders. 

Sanwo-Olu, at the event, highlighted the many benefits of the Coastal Highway to Nigeria, particular Lagos State, saying that the flagship project was already delivering substantial benefits to the economy of Lagos State and also to countless local communities. 

According to him, the Coastal Highway has made significant progress, allowing a critical section to be opened to commuters during the Christmas celebrations and, therefore, expressed his deep appreciation to President Tinubu for envisioning and initiating the project. 

"On the positive side, we have many highlights from 2025. The Coastal Highway made significant progress, allowing a critical section to be opened to commuters during the Christmas celebrations. 

"That flagship project is already delivering substantial benefits to the economy of our state and to countless 
local communities. 

"We are deeply grateful to President Tinubu for envisioning and initiating this project; for the dedication that helped secure the required investment financing; and for granting approval for 
its opening in December, bringing much-needed relief to Lagosians," the governor said. 

Sanwo-Olu  said even as the state seeks the face of God for continued protection and safety, his administration fully recognized its responsibility as a state government to continue taking every step to improve and enforce safety standards, as well as strengthen emergency response systems. 

The governor, who took one of his Bible readings from 1 Thessalonians 5:18, said the state witnessed high and low point in the year 2025, but in all things the state would continue to give thanks to God. 

"We give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. In all  circumstances, indeed, we have had a most eventful year in Lagos State, with both high points and low 
points. And through it all, we remain full of gratitude," the governor said. 

Governor Sanwo-Olu, however, expressed the belief that the year 2026 would be  a year of extraordinary meaning and significance to the state and to the benefit of all. 

The governor assured residents of the state that, they will witness more transformational projects across critical sectors in 2026, including transportation, agriculture, health, energy, environment and infrastructure, as his administration intensifies efforts to deepen
development and improve the quality of life of Lagosians. 

He further assured that his administration remained committed to completing and inaugurating all ongoing infrastructural projects across the five IBILE divisions of the state within the year, stressing that development remained inclusive and people-focused. 

"For this reason, I am deeply driven and compelled to make this year count – deliberately and decisively. 
 
"It must be a year of extraordinary meaning, significance, and benefit for all of us. Among the many projects we will be commissioning and putting 
to use this year, there are some that are especially close to my heart," he said. 

Governor Sanwo-Olu, while reaffirmed his administration’s alignment with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Lagos State and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu’s Federal Government, noted that despite economic and social challenges, Lagos had continued to record steady progress due to strategic planning, resilience of residents and support from successive administrations. 

The governor, however, noted that, sustained collaboration between the Federal and subnational governments was key to ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach Nigerians at the grassroots. 

Clergymen at the event offered prayers for President Tinubu and his family, Governor Sanwo-Olu and his administration, the executive, legislative and judicial arms of government, as well as for peace, security and divine protection for Lagos State and Nigeria. 

The thanksgiving service was enlivened by soul-lifting performances from renowned gospel artistes, including Yinka Alaseyori and Kunle Adeolu, to the delight of thousands of worshippers in attendance.
