Ibadan Explosion: Makinde demands evidence after Fayose alleges he took ₦50bn from Tinubu

Oyo State Governor, Engnr Seyi Makinde, has challenged former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, to produce evidence supporting his claim that Makinde received ₦50billion from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the explosion that rocked Ibadan, the state capital, in January 2024.

Fayose made the allegation during a television interview on Friday, asserting that the N50billion was provided by the presidency, but was not publicly disclosed, to assist in the aftermath of the explosion that left five people, injured dozens, and damaged homes.

The former governor also alleged that the funds did not go directly into the state’s accounts.

Reacting, Makinde’s Chief Press Secretary, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, dismissed the accusation as unfounded and called on Fayose to back up his claim with credible evidence.

He described the claim as baseless, insisting that if such support had been provided by the presidency, it should be clearly documented.

Olarenwaju also questioned Fayose’s credibility, saying that making unverified allegations on air was irresponsible without presenting proof.

He reiterated that the state government's actions after the explosion were transparent and aimed at supporting victims and affected communities.

The dispute comes amid ongoing political tensions, with Governor Makinde declaring a few days ago that he would not support Tinubu’s re-election bid, come 2027.
