Oyo State Governor, Engnr 'Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, declared that he is qualified to serve as Nigeria’s president, amid widespread speculation about his interest, ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Governor Makinde made this declaration while speaking during a media briefing in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, citing his experience as a two-term governor and his professional background as an engineer and business leader as evidence of his readiness to lead the country.
"Let me be very clear: I am qualified, in fact, overqualified, to serve Nigeria at the highest level.
"I have governed Oyo State effectively, and look at the current president, what brought him to the table? He was governor of Lagos State for two terms. By May 2027, God willing, I will have completed my full tenure as a two-term governor of Oyo State," Makinde said.
Besides, Makinde equally cited his corporate experience, noting that he ran a company at 29 while some of his peers were still completing their youth service.
"I worked for multinational oil companies, including Shell, ExxonMobil, and Chevron, without ever relying on NNPC or similar institutions," the governor added.
Governor Makinde, while acknowledging that the 2027 elections were still over a year away, however, emphasised the need for a strong democracy and robust opposition parties.
The governor also frowned at the recent defection of several governors and top politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that such moves could undermine Nigeria’s democratic progress.
